Tri-fold sofa

A convertible sofa and sofa frame deployable between a sofa orientation and a bed orientation. The frame has a base frame with a seat extension frame comprising a seat frame and a mid-frame pivotally secured to the base frame. Cushioning is on one side of the base frame. A seat back frame is pivotally secured to the base frame, the second cushioning on what is a back side when in the sofa orientation. Removable seat back cushions engage the front side of the seat back frame in the sofa orientation. In the bed orientation, the seat frame is extended, the seat back portion is pivoted horizontally, and the removable seat back cushions are located on the mid-frame between the seat frame and the seat back frame.

1. A convertible sofa comprising:
a seating base including a first side and a second side positioned opposite the first side; a mid-section including one side and an opposite side positioned opposite the one side, the one side of the mid-section being pivotably coupled to the first side of the seating base; a seat section pivotably coupled to the opposite side of the mid-section; and a seat back section pivotably coupled to the second side of the seating base, the seat back section including a planar portion that provides a backrest for the sofa; wherein the sofa moves between a sofa orientation where the seat back section is upright to provide the backrest for the sofa and a bed orientation where the seat back section is essentially horizontal to provide a sleeping surface for the sofa; wherein the planar portion of the seat back section rests directly on and is entirely supported by the seating base when the sofa is in the bed orientation; and wherein the seat back section moves between being upright and horizontal independent of the mid-section and the seat section.
