[Class 80 (ii).] In a clutch wherein engagement is effected through the axial expansion of a chamber rotating with the driving member and containing fluid which generates pressure due to centrifugal force, the fluid is contained in a fluid-tight chamber arranged within the expansible chamber. In a friction clutch, the expansible chamber is bounded by the presser plate 9 and walls 5, 5<a>, all rotating with the driving element 1, the plate 9 having a hub 9<a> which passes through the wall 5<a> and is urged to disengaged position by a spring 11. The inner fluid-tight chamber may be in the form of a rubber tube 12, Fig. 1, secured to the wall 5<a> by bolts 14, one or more of which may serve also as filling orifices ; or the chamber may be of metal having a corrugated outer periphery 16, Fig. 2, the inner periphery being left open and a fluid-tight telescopic joint being formed between the hub 9<a> and a sleeve 5b projecting from the wall 5<a>; or both peripheries may be corrugated or telescopic. Radial baffles 15 or partitions may be provided within the fluid chamber. In a cone or single-plate clutch, the presser plate 9 will abut against the driven cone or plate through a thrust bearing.
