PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a virtual image display device that can enlarge video image light with simple structure, and to provide a head-mounted display that includes the virtual image display device and makes an observer easy to view.SOLUTION: A virtual image display device 1 comprises: an image generation unit 3 that generates video image light modulated based on a video image signal; and an optical element 5 that has an incident surface 56 upon which the video image light emitted from the image generation unit 3 is incident, and an emitting surface 57 that emits the video image light having an enlarged cross-sectional area of the video image light incident upon the incident surface 56. The optical element 5 has a first light guide unit 51 and a second light guide unit 52 that connect the incident surface 56 and the emitting surface 57 to guide the video image light emitted from the image generation unit 3, and a first light branching layer 54 that is provided between the first light guide unit 51 and the second light guide unit 52, causes a part of the video image light emitted from the image generation unit 3 to be reflected, and causes a part of the video image light to pass through. The video image light emitted from the image generation unit 3 is configured to be obliquely incident upon the first light branching layer 54. |
