Disclosed is a method for designing a mould (12, 14) for casting a semi-finished ophthalmic lens blank. The surface of the mould (12, 14) is designed so that the surface of the mould (12, 14) substantially fits a predetermined closed curve representative of the geometry of a gasket (16) to be used in combination with the mould (12, 14). The surface of the mould (12, 14) is designed using an optimisation process and the predetermined closed curve being a constraint for the optimisation process.
