Fermentation process involving adjusting specific co-uptake

The disclosure relates to a method of producing one or more alcohol from a gaseous substrate comprising carbon monoxide (CO). The process comprises: adding gaseous substrate comprising carbon monoxide (CO) into an aqueous nutrient medium in a bioreactor; said aqueous nutrient medium comprising one or more microorganism; increasing cell density by adjusting specific CO uptake of one or more said microorganism in said aqueous nutrient medium; controlling rate of change of the specific CO uptake comprising adjusting one or more steps selected from any of: rate of input of CO; measuring rate of CO input; measuring rate of CO output; and measuring cell mass; changing specific CO uptake in amounts in the range of from 0.1 to about 1.0 mmol/min/gram dry cell; adding a continuous flow of aqueous nutrient medium into the bioreactor; and removing a continuous flow of fermentation broth from the bioreactor; wherein the method is repeated until obtaining an ethanol productivity in the range of from 1 to 50 g/L per day.
