The present invention relates to a method to stop an internal combustion engine. In the method of the present invention, when an ignition and/or spray is stopped; an air volume first supplied to the internal combustion engine is decreased, and the air volume supplied to the internal combustion engine is increased after a revolution count (n) of the internal combustion engine becomes lower than a threshold value of the revolution count (ns) which can be preset. A first revolution count value (n1) is detected at a first detection time point (t1), and a second revolution count value (n2) is detected at a second detection time point (t2). The two detection time points (t1, t2) are selected for the first revolution count value (n1) to be greater than the threshold value of the revolution count (ns) which can be preset, and for the second revolution count value (n2) to be smaller than the threshold value of the revolution count (ns) which can be preset. A means of forming torque to decelerate a rotational movement of the internal combustion engine is controlled in accordance to a quantity of energy to be extinguished (E). The energy quantity to be extinguished (E) is determined in accordance to the first revolution count value (n1) and the second revolution count value (n2). |
