A drive assembly converts the motion of a person running or jogging into mechanical motion to drive a machine or apparatus, such as self-propelled apparatus like a bicycle, or stationary exercise apparatus. The drive assembly comprises a rotatable member, such as a sprocket crank arrangement 17, coupled to a frame of the machine and to stirrups 22, and where foot pedals 26 are pivotally attached to each of the stirrups. A first pivot 24 is connected between a stirrup 22 and the rotatable member 17, and a second pivot 23 is connected between the same stirrup 22 and the frame 14. In use the pivot axes 25 of the foot pedals travels both in front of and behind a rearward position of the second pivots 23, and the second pivots 23 follows a substantially forward and upward and downward and backward reciprocating path 71 relative to the frame. The pivots 23 may be running on a slide along axis 14 or mounted on one the end of a long link attached at the other end to the frame. Preferably, a pivot axis 25 of a foot pedal remains below the first pivot and the second pivot during motion of the foot pedal. Preferably, the pivot axes of the foot pedals trace asymmetric ovate paths during motion of the foot pedals. |
