The invention relates to a new process for the preparation of rosuvastatin [7-[4-(4-fluorophenyl)-6-isopropyl-2-(methanesulphonyl-methylamino)pyrimidin-5-yl]-(3R,5S)-dihydroxy-hept-6-enoic acid] calcium and zinc salts having formulae (II) and (III) respectively, characterized in that the above mentioned rosuvastatin tert.-butylammonium salt of formula (IV) is reacted with a source of calcium or zinc ions respectively in a two phase mixture of a water immiscible or slightly miscible organic solvent and water, and then the obtained product is isolated.
