MULTI-RANGE OBJECT DETECTION DEVICE AND METHOD

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a detection device and method that detect a plurality of objects located at multiple ranges from a vehicle.SOLUTION: An image of a plurality of objects 1 and 2 is captured by an image capturing unit 108 provided in a vehicle. The image is divided into a plurality of sub-images. One or more features are extracted from the plurality of sub-images. Each of the plurality of sub-images is simultaneously processed for calculating a gradient associated with the plurality of sub-images. A cell histogram is created by casting a weighted vote for an orientation based histogram channel on the basis of a value associated with the gradient. The calculated gradient is normalized by grouping the cells in a spatial block. A Support Vector Machine (SVM) linear type classifier is applied to the plurality of sub-images in order to classify a near object and a far object into a category of a pedestrian or a vehicle.
