Preformed resins derived from polyhydric alcohols, polybasic acids and resin acids are heated with or used as an ingredient in the manufacture of resins derived from polyhydric alcohols, polybasic acids and fatty acids or fatty oils or both. Suitable resin acids include colophony, abietic acid, pyroabietic acid, hydro- and hydroxy-abietic acid, crude balsams, copals, elemi and condensation products of phenols or urea and formaldehyde or a -b -unsaturated carbonyl compounds with natural resin acids. Suitable fatty acids or oils include castor oil, linseed oil, wood oil, oleic acid, stearic acid and octadecadion-9 : 10-acid-1. Polyhydric alcohols includes glycerol and may be replaced in part by monohydric alcohols such as benzyl alcohols. Suitable polybasic carboxylic acids include dibasic or polybasic aromatic and aliphatic, saturated and unsaturated acids and hydroxy acids such as malic acid, phthalic acid anhydride, sebacic acid, and the acids may be replaced in part by monobasic aliphatic and aromatic carboxylic acids such as benzoic acid, cinnamic acid, sorbic acid and vinylacrylic acid. The products may be used as bases or admixtures to varnishes, adhesives or plastics. In examples, (1) a resin derived from colophony, malic acid and glycerol is blended with one derived from castor oil, phthalic acid anhydride and glycerol; (2) glycerol, phthalic acid anhydride and oleic acid are condensed and the resin blended with a resin derived from colophony, malic acid and glycerol; (3) a resin derived from colophony, sebacic acid, glycerol and benzylalcohol is blended with a resin derived from stearic acid, phthalic anhydride and glycerol; (4) a resin derived from colophony, glycerol and phthalic acid anhydride is blended with wood oil and a resin derived from phthalic acid anhydride, linseed oil, glycerol and vinylacrylic acid; (5) a resin derived from phthalic acid anhydride, castor oil and glycerol is blended with linseed oil and resin derived from colophony, sebacic acid, glycerol and benzyl alcohol. |
