[Class 53.] Zinc and carbon electrodes F, D are immersed in a moist mass of carbon, graphite, and iodine. The zinc electrode may consist of plates F connected together and to a zinc container B lined with cellulose or other absorbent material C as shown in plan in Fig. 2. The container is filled with a mixture G of iodine, carbon and graphite in a moist state and is enclosed in an outer sealed receptacle A. The cell may be charged like a storage battery and in order to indicate the state of charge the mixture G may contain a halogen salt of zinc such as zinc chloride. Completion of the charging operation is indicated by a sudden rise in the terminal voltage. |
