415,891. Casings for variable-speed gears. HUMBER, Ltd., WISHART, N. M., and HEYNES, W. M., Stoke, Coventry. Sept. 15, 1933, No. 25590. [Class 80 (iv).] A casing for change-speed gears having spigotally-mounted coaxial shafts 12, 13, supported in bearings 16, 21 and 17 in its end-walls and in one or more integral webs 18 respectively, has the bearing-opening 19 in the web of the same size as the opening 20 in an end-wall, the opening 22 in the other endwall being of the same size, or larger, so that a boring-bar, with a single cutter or set of cutters, can be passed from end-to-end through the casing to machine the openings in succession. When the opening 22 is larger than the others, for instance to accommodate an end-cap 24, the boring bar may carry a second cutter or set of cutters, spaced from the first. The intermediate bearing 17 is smaller than the end ones and is received in an annulus 25 spun over its ends and retained in the web by a screw 26.
