<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a synthetic resin container of a rectangular bottle shape which achieves both load resistant strength in a lateral direction and restoring force to a shape change in a well balanced manner, and is particularly suitable for selling goods in an automatic vending machine by improving the strength in the vicinity of a boundary between a shoulder and a body where deformation is easily caused by a load in the lateral direction and facilitating restoration of the shape even if deformation is caused. <P>SOLUTION: The shoulder 3 is connected with the body 4 while curved surface parts 32 formed of a gently-curved surface are interposed between the same and at least side surface parts 41 of the body 4 chamfered at corners. The side surface part 41 of the body part 4 is formed with a pair of outer longitudinal grooves 43 extending to the shoulder 3, along the boundaries with the chamfered portions 42. Between the upper end sides of the pair of outer longitudinal grooves 43 extending to the shoulder 3, a swelling part 32 is formed including a swelling surface 33 gently connecting to the side surface part 41 of the body 4.
