A method is used in processing data storage system configuration information. A capture tool is used to create a template from a configuration of a first data storage system. The template is published, and a configuration engine is used to apply the template to configuring a second data storage system.

1. A method for use in processing data storage system configuration information, the method comprising:
using a capture tool to automatically create a template from a configuration of a first physical data storage system, wherein the capture tool is enabled to modify and validate the template, wherein the template includes non-application specific information to specify configuration goals for specific data storage attributes including iSCSI (internet small computer system interface) targets and licenses and application specific information to specify configuration goals for specific data storage attributes including hosts, applications and storage pools; publishing the template such that the template is advertised as available on an ecosystem, wherein the ecosystem is configured to store and distribute templates including best practice templates, wherein the data storage system is aware of other systems in the ecosystem; using the capture tool to identify and download a template from the ecosystem to the data storage system and upload a template from the data storage system to the ecosystem, wherein the capture tool is aware of other data storage systems in the ecosystem; and using a configuration engine to apply the template to configuring a second physical data storage system.
