Disclosed are a memory system for controlling an operational performance, and a method for operating a memory system. With respect to the method for operating a memory system according to an embodiment of the present invention, the memory system comprises: a memory controller; and a memory apparatus. The method comprises the following steps: receiving performance level information according to the temperature from the outside, and storing the received performance level information in the memory controller; setting an operational performance of the memory system at a performance of a first level; detecting the temperature inside the memory system; and controlling an operational performance of the memory system at a performance of a second level, based on the performance level information under the control of the memory controller regardless of the control from the outside, in accordance with a temperature detection result.
