1. A computer implemented method for managing performance of optical wavelength connections in an optical network, the computer implemented method comprising:
grouping, by a computer, a set of applications to form a set of application groups where an application group has a plurality of applications; establishing, by the computer, a single optical connection for each of the set of application groups over fiber optic cables in the optical network, wherein the single optical connection has a bandwidth; establishing, by the computer, a set of persistent upper layer connections for each of the set of application groups; monitoring, by the computer, a network traffic demand on the single optical connection by determining whether the network traffic demand on the single optical connection falls beneath a lower bandwidth threshold and determining whether the network traffic demand on the single optical connection exceeds an upper bandwidth threshold; responsive to the computer determining that the network traffic demand on the single optical connection is less than the lower bandwidth threshold, modifying, by the computer, the single optical connection by decreasing the bandwidth of the single optical connection; and responsive to the computer determining that the network traffic demand on the single optical connection is greater than the upper bandwidth threshold, modifying, by the computer, the single optical connection by increasing the bandwidth of the single optical connection, wherein the set of persistent upper layer connections for each of the set of applications are not marked as being down during the modifying of the bandwidth. |
