Lowering nitrogen-containing Lewis bases in molecular sieve oligomerisation

A process for the oligomerization of olefins includes treating, e.g., water washing, an olefin-containing hydrocarbon stream to lower the concentration of an organic nitrogen-containing Lewis base contained therein until the treated hydrocarbon stream is substantially free of the Lewis base; and subsequently contacting the treated hydrocarbon stream with a molecular sieve catalyst to produce a product including at least one oligomer.

1. A process for the oligomerisation of olefins comprising:
(a) treating an olefin-containing hydrocarbon stream comprising an organic nitrogen-containing Lewis base to thereby lower the concentration of the organic nitrogen-containing Lewis base in the olefin-containing hydrocarbon stream; and (b) subsequently contacting the treated olefin-containing hydrocarbon stream with a molecular sieve oligomerisation catalyst to produce a product comprising at least one oligomer;
wherein said Lewis base is selected from the group consisting of at least one of acetonitrile, propionitrile, dimethylformamide, N-methyl-pyrrolidone, and mixtures thereof;wherein the treating consists essentially of an extraction step of water washing; andwherein the treated olefin-containing hydrocarbon has a concentration of the Lewis base from 0.05 ppm to 1 ppm by weight based on the total treated olefin-containing hydrocarbon stream.
