A method for evaluating an odor generated when using a self-tanning agent comprising dihydroxyacetone, wherein at least one compound selected from pyrazine compounds represented by the following general formula (1) is used as an indicator substance: wherein R1 represents a methyl group, an ethyl group or an acetyl group, and R2, R3 and R4 independently represent a hydrogen atom or a methyl group; which method comprises the following steps (a), (b) and (c): the step (a) of bringing the stratum corneum of a human being, keratin obtained from the skin of a human being, or a hydrolyzate of any one of the two, into contact with the self-tanning agent comprising dihydroxyacetone, thereby advancing a reaction therebetween,the step (b) of collecting volatile substances generated by the reaction, andthe step (c) of measuring the pyrazine compound represented by the general formula (1) that is contained in the collected volatile substances, and evaluating the odor based on this measurement.
