Overvoltage protection device, which comprises: at least one surge arrester, a thermally triggerable switching device which is connected in series with the surge arrester, the thermally triggerable switching device having an unlocking slide which is movable in a path of motion, and a thermal trigger means operatively coupled to the unlocking slide, wherein the surge arrester and the thermally triggerable switching device form a unit and the thermal trigger means is arranged in an area of the expected heating of the surge arrester when the surge arrester is overloaded and is thermally and mechanically coupled to the surge arrester and releases the unlocking slide in the event of a thermal overload, wherein the thermal trigger means functions as a stop part through which neither operating current nor surge current flows and blocks the path of motion of the unlocking slide which bears against the thermal trigger means, wherein the switching device includes two opposite engaging contact pieces, wherein at least one of the contact pieces is movable in a direction of motion and is spring-preloaded to move in the direction of motion when the switching device changes from a closed condition to an open condition, and wherein the closed condition of the switching device is secured by the unlocking slide and can be released by the thermal trigger means to open the switching device in the event of a thermal overload.
