An aerial positioning system includes a light detection and ranging (lidar) device mounted on a hub, and one or more reflectors configured to be attached to a portion of an aircraft, and to encode information which can be scanned by the lidar device. The lidar device is configured to scan a field of view to identify the reflectors and to determine position data based on the encoded information.
