TONER RESINS AND PROCESSES FOR MAKING THE SAME

Amorphous polyester resins and processes for making the same are disclosed herein. In particular, the process for making the resin provides resins with improved properties. The amorphous polyester resins have substantially reduced free fumaric acid as compared to that made from conventional processes. The toner resins are used to prepare toner compositions the have improved performance.

1. A process for making a toner resin emulsion comprising:
reacting an organic diol with a cyclic alkylene carbonate in the presence of a first catalyst to thereby form a polyalkoxy diol; reacting the polyalkoxy diol with one or more diacid reagents in the presence of a second catalyst in an esterification reaction; monitoring an acid value of a resulting mixture produced from the esterification reaction; subsequently polycondensing the resulting mixture with an unsaturated diacid to form an unsaturated polyester resin; dissolving the unsaturated polyester resin in an organic solvent to form a solution; neutralizing the solution of the polyester resin; adding a sufficient amount of water to the neutralized solution to form a resin emulsion; and removing the organic solvent in the resin emulsion.
