517,689. Artificial filaments, films &c.; polyvinyl compounds. GROVES, W. W. (I.G. Farbenindustrie Akt.- Ges.). Aug. 4, 1938, No. 23065. [Classes 2 (ii) and 2 (iii)] The stability to heat of shaped structures of polyvinyl chloride, after-chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, or mixed polymerizates containing polyvinyl chloride is improved by subjecting them to the action of a gaseous halogen or of a solution of halogen in water or another indifferent solvent. Fibres, threads, fabrics, films, bands, hosepipes, rods, or other articles may be treated. Threads of polyvinyl chloride which begin to soften and shrink at 70‹C. are subjected to treatment with a warm dilute aqueous solution of bromine. The treated threads shrink at 85-90‹C. Polyvinyl chloride threads are treated with moist chlorine gas. Threads of a mixed polymerizate from vinyl chloride and vinyl acetate or fabrics made of such threads are treated with chlorine gas. After-chlorinated polyvinyl chloride is spun to form threads and. these are treated with bromine water, or moist chlorine gas. Specification 401,200 is referred to. |
