Provided is a process for producing hydrogen gas in a separate stream from syngas. An assembly for producing hydrogen gas in a separate stream from syngas and a method of producing hydrogen are also provided.

1. A process of providing hydrogen gas and syngas in separate streams, the process comprising:
a) heating a metal and/or metal salt with water to produce a metal oxide and hydrogen gas; b) extracting the hydrogen gas; c) heating the metal oxide with a biomass feedstock to produce a mixture comprising syngas and a metal vapour; and d) hydrogenating the syn-gas to produce synthetic crude.
