[Class 42 (ii)] In a measuring-machine in which the indicators are disengaged at the end of a measuring operation and returned to zero by the shortest possible route, such as is described in Specifications 387,358, 396,777, and 396,812, the indicators are kept disengaged until a new measurement is to be made, and the units indicator is properly located in its zero position to ensure clean meshing with its drive pinion on re-engagement. When the knife lever 25 is depressed, the presser-roller 54 is lowered and retained by a catch 61. The depressing of the lever 25 also lifts a plate 68 carrying cam projections 73 which push the one-toothed wheel 39 on the fractions indicator shaft 33 out of gear with the tentoothed wheel 42 on the units indicator shaft 43. This plate 68 is held in its raised position, and the two wheels 39, 42 out of gear, by a catch 78 on the shaft 56 of the presser-roller carrier 55. The knife shaft 59 is connected by a lever 79 and rod 81 with a lever 83 pivoted at 84 and linked at 85 to a rod 86. When the knife lever is depressed a projection 87 on the rod 86 lifts a spring pressed lever 92 and withdraws the projection 93 from the gear wheel 42 allowing the units indicators 44, 47 to be zeroized. When the lever 25 is released the projection 93 drops and positions the gear 42 ready for engagement by the wheel 39 which takes place when the button 28 is pressed, allowing the presser roller 54 to rise, the catch 78 to withdraw, and the plate 68 to fall.
