A routing scheme (multicast, unicast or broadcast) is selected, for providing a communications service to a plurality of subscriber terminals in a cellular network, by a service manager that is at least logically separate from the cellular network and controls the communications service for the plurality of subscriber terminals. This allows optimisation jointly across upper and lower layers. Information about one or both of: the plurality of subscriber terminals; and at least one characteristic of the cellular network is communicated between the cellular network and the service manager. A routing scheme for providing the communications service to the plurality of subscriber terminals is selected based on the communicated information. The subscriber terminal information may comprise type of application being used by the terminals, number of subscribers using the service or location of the terminals. The network characteristic may be load, QoS parameters predicted network performance (latency, throughput) or cell capability. |
