<p>The invention relates to an apparatus for separating sheet materials, in particular banknotes, comprising a separator (1, 2, 3) having a drive which drives the separator in a first direction (5) during the separation, at least one sensor (10) checking the separation for multiple feeds, and a control device (8) for monitoring and controlling the apparatus, in which a restraining element (3) of the separator generates at least two different restraining forces, wherein the control device drives the restraining element in such a way that a first restraining force is produced by the restraining element during the separation, while a second restraining force, higher as compared with the first, is generated by the restraining element after the control device has concluded from the signals from the sensor that a multiple feed is present, wherein, given the presence of a multiple feed, the control device additionally drives the drive of the separator in such a way that the separator is at least driven in a second direction opposite to the first direction.</p> |
