A superconducting coil impregnated in resin 34 comprising an axially extending coil mounting arrangement which includes a feature embedded within the resin, between layers of turns of the coil. There may be support elements 32, which may provide tensile support, linked to annular electrically insulating material 36 between coil turns, the coil structure being resin impregnated to form a monolithic structure. End coils 28 and inner coils may have one or two support regions respectively, with multiple supports arranged around the support region which may follow the coil circumference. The coils may have shield coils, be mounted in a cryogen and have spacers between tensile support members, which may be inserted into passageways between coil turns. Thrust blocks may be provided on tensile support members. The tensile support member may have a through hole with a clevis and be electrically conductive. The superconducting coil may be manufactured with a demountable coil mould where the resin is hardened and the coils are wet wound. The support may pass through multiple coils and match the curvature of the coil windings. The support elements may be bolted to the coils and the use of mechanical fasteners allows for differences in thermal expansion during a quench. |
