The present invention provides a vehicle interior illumination device that can appropriately illuminate a vehicle interior or passenger compartment without distracting the driver. The vehicle interior illumination device is provided with a first illumination unit (1) for illuminating a first region (A) in the front and upper part of the passenger compartment, a second illumination unit (2) for illuminating a second region (B) in the vehicle rearward of the first region and in the upper of the passenger compartment, a third illumination unit (3) for illuminating a third region (C) in the vehicle downward than the first region (A) and in the front part of the passenger compartment, a fourth illumination unit (4) for illuminating a fourth region (D) vehicle rearward than the first region (A) and in the vehicle downward part, and an illumination controller (5). While the vehicle is running, the illuminating controller (5) differentiates the illumination intensity of the first illumination unit (1) relative to that of the fourth illumination unit (4) or/and the illumination intensity of the second illumination unit (2) relative to the illumination intensity of the third illumination unit (3).
