The manufacture of diphenylolpropane from phenol, acetone, and an acid condensing agent is effected in the presence of an inert liquid hydrocarbon or hydrocarbon mixture. Examples are given in which phenol and acetone are condensed with the aid of sulphuric acid and with the addition to the mixture of (1) toluene, (2) benzene and (3) solvent naphtha; in each example, the hydrocarbon is added after the reaction has proceeded for some time. Other specified hydrocarbons are gasoline and petroleum naphtha. Specification 18824/12, [Class 2 (iii)], is referred to.
