The invention relates to a process for the production of synthesis gas by the use of autothermal reforming in which tail gas from downstream Fischer-Tropsh synthesis is hydrogenated and then added to the autothermal reforming stage.

1. A process for the production of synthesis gas from a hydrocarbon feedstock with reduced metal dusting in at least burner parts of an autothermal reformer (ATR), catalytic partial oxidation reactor (CPO), or partial oxidation reactor (POx), the process comprising the steps of:
passing said hydrocarbon feedstock through an ATR, CPO, or POx; and withdrawing a stream of hot effluent synthesis gas from the ATR, CPO or POx; passing tail gas from a Fischer-Tropsch synthesis gas stage through a hydrogenation stage comprising a copper hydrogenation catalyst to produce a hydrogenated tail gas; and adding the hydrogenated tail gas directly to said ATR, CPO or POx.
