[Class 51 (ii)] A gas-fired horizontal retort setting is formed with vertical transverse walls 16 dividing it, lengthwise of the retorts 1, into separately fired zones, each zone having an intermediate transverse wall 15 to provide flues 12 through which the heating gases pass upwardly around the retorts, the flues 12 communicating, at their upper ends, through apertures 17 controlled by dampers 18, with down-flues 19 formed within the thickness of the intermediate wall 15. The gases pass from the lower ends of the flues 19 into chambers 6 containing airheating pipes 7 and from thence through damper-controlled ports 20 to the main offtake flue 21, 22. The tiers of retorts 1 are separated by a longitudinal wall 3 extending upwardly from the roof of a central chamber 5 which houses the gas main 14 with its burner supply pipes 11 and valves 13 and into which open the valve-controlled inlet ends 8 of the air-heating pipes 7. The latter have vertical branches 9 which discharge into the combustion flues 12 adjacent the ends 10 of the gas supply pipes 11.</p> |
