The automatic adjustment of audio alert characteristics of an alert device using ambient noise levels is described. In one aspect of the invention, a machine-readable medium has executable instructions to cause a machine to perform a method to receive an audio sample of ambient noise and adjust a characteristic of the audio alert, such as, the volume level of the audio alert, based on the ambient noise level.

1. At least one non-transitory machine-readable storage medium comprising instructions that when executed, cause one or more machines to:
collect a plurality of audio samples of ambient noise prior to receiving a first notification of an occurrence of an audio alert to be broadcast, wherein a time between collection of at least two of the plurality of audio samples is based at least in part on an amount of remaining battery life; and adjust the characteristics of the audio alert based on an audio alert rule relating to decibel levels, wherein the decibel level audio alert rule includes instructions regarding adjusting a volume level of the audio alert between a first active setting and a second active setting based on a plurality of decibel levels of the plurality of audio samples.
