The invention relates to compounds of formula I:;
where a, R1, and R3-6 are as defined in the specification, or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof. The compounds of formula I are serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors. The invention also relates to pharmaceutical compositions comprising such compounds; methods of using such compounds; and process and intermediates for preparing such compounds.

A method to measure the inhibition of serotonin reuptake in a mammal comprising administering to the mammal a serotonin transporter-inhibiting amount of a compound of formula: where a is 0, 1, 2, 3, or 4; each R1 is independently halo or trifluoromethyl; R3 is hydrogen, halo, or —C1-6alkyl; R4, R5, and R6 are independently hydrogen or halo; or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof.
