A device for detecting at least one flow characteristic of a fluid medium comprising: at least one flow channel, through which the fluid medium may flow in a direction of flow; at least one sensor element, which is situated in the flow channel, for detecting the flow characteristic, the sensor element having at least one heating; at least one state sensor for detecting at least one state of the sensor element; at least one bidirectional electrical interface, the device being configured to receive information and transmit information via the bidirectional electrical interface; and a connection to at least one control unit located in at least one external device; wherein the heating element is regulated by the at least one control unit, a heating temperature is selected by the at least one control unit based on an operating mode of the device that is selected or detected by the at least one control unit,an activation of the heating element, an activation of the state sensor, and an activation of the sensor element are independently controlled by the at least one control unit,the heating element heats the fluid medium in the flow channel that is in the vicinity of the sensor element,the device is configured to detected the state of the sensor element with the aid of the state sensor and transmit the state of the sensor element via the bidirectional electrical interface to the at least one external device, the external device being connected to the device via the bidirectional electrical interface,the device is configured to receive at least one signal from the at least one external device via the bidirectional electrical interface and to activate the heating element of the device in accordance with the received signal,when the operating mode is a standby mode, the state sensor is configured to detect the state of the sensor element and transmit the state of the sensor element to the at least one external device via the bidirectional interface, andwhen the operating mode is the standby mode, the sensor element is configured to not detect the flow characteristic.
