The iridium complex includes an Ir atom and a first ligand which coordinates to the Ir atom, the first ligand represented by a formula (L 1 ): where: an atom indicated by an asterisk is a coordinating atom which coordinates to the Ir; R 1 is an electron-withdrawing substituent; each of R 2 to R 6 is a substituent; m is 1 to 3; n is 0 to 4; p is 0 to 4; q is 1 to 3; p+q5; r is 0 to 4; s is 1 to 3; r+s5; and each of t and u is 0 to 4.
