The present invention relates to a mobile terminal which can detect a tap of tapping a display portion while the display portion is inactivated, and a control method thereof. The mobile terminal comprises: a terminal main body; a display portion converted any one from an activated state that a lighting installed therein is turned on, and an inactivated state that the lighting is turned off into the other; and a control portion for detecting a plurality of touch inputs applied to the display portion while the display portion is inactivated, and releasing a locked state of the terminal, converting the display portion in the inactivated state into the activated state, and selectively displaying at least one execution screen based on properties of the detected touch inputs among a plurality of execution screens preset in the display portion which has been converted into the activated state, when the detected touch inputs are matched with a preset pattern.
