A shoe upper provided with: a cord (1) inserted in the through holes (H) of at least one reinforcing material (3L) of an inside section (31) and/or an outside section (32) and disposed along the front-to-back direction; exposed areas (10) in which a portion of the cord (1) is disposed in an exposed state; and a shoelace (2) that hooks onto the cord (1) in the transverse direction of the foot in the exposed areas (10) to draw the inside section (31) and the outside section (32) towards each other. The respective upper ends (4) of the reinforcing material (3L) are attached to a flexible material (3F) either at the front or the back section of the upper end and are set on the flexible material (3F) in an unattached state at the other of the back or front section.
