[Class 81 (ii)] Apparatus for frictional treatment of the nasal cavity comprises flexible rods guided in a casing containing mechanism for simultaneously reciprocating and rotating the rods, and a head rest for the patient. The rods 2, 3, fitted with small knobs 4, 5, are provided with quick pitch screws 9, 10, which are capable of rotation in a plate 14. A strap 21 is fixed to plate 14 and rests with its convex surface on the convex surface 22a of a lever 22. The lever and strap are connected by a shackle 25. When the free end 24 of the lever is pressed down, the screws 9, 10 are moved upwards through holes 11, 12 in a fixed plate 13 which act as fixed nuts, and thereby cause the screws and rods to rotate. The amplitude of the reciprocation may be controlled by the provision of an adjustable stop 26 against which the key 24 abuts. The plate 14 is provided with guide rods 15, 16. For adjusting the guide sleeves 7, 8 to the width of the patient's nose, they are pivotally mounted on a member 29. Each sleeve is provided with a speculum which is an easy friction fit on the member 29. Each speculum consists of a pivoted wing 38, 39, the opening of which is effected by screws 36, 37. Member 29 is formed with a part cylindrical member 42, so that the member 29 can be pivoted on the unit 19. The pivot 42 may be fixed in any position by the engagement of a screw 44 on the arm 45 with any of the holes 46 in the unit 19. Narrow slots 42b are provided in the pivot 42, so that this may assume any position without jamming of the rods 2, 3. A chin rest 41 is mounted on a ball joint 67 and may be locked in any position by means of a screw 68. The joint is carried by a pillar 69 sliding in a tube 70 and which can be fixed at any desired height by a screw 71. The unit 19 is capable of sliding towards and away from the chin rest on a guide 48, and the plate 47 carrying the unit can be displaced vertically in pillars 61, 62. Graduations 63, 64, 65 are provided. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the following subjectmatter. The guide 48 is formed as a rack, Fig. 2 (Cancelled), and meshes with a pinion 49 mounted on a spindle 50 on the unit 19. The spindle is provided with an external control knob. Pillars 61, 62 are also formed with racks 59, 60, which mesh with pinions 57, 58 mounted on shaft 56. The shaft is rotated through bevel gearing 54 by an external knob. In Fig. 6 (Cancelled), instead of passing through holes 11, 12, the screws 9, 10 pass through a slot in a slide 72. This slot widens out at 72b, so that when the slide is pulled out, the screws pass freely through the slide and may be reciprocated without rotation. For rotation only of the rods, slide 72 is pulled out, and the rods rotated by the action of a rack 73 on pinions 74, 75 keyed to the screws 9, 10. A slot 19a is provided so that the rack is capable of engaging with the pinions 74, 75 at any height. The movable unit comprising the plate 14 and strap 21 may be fixed by an adjustable slide member 77 adapted to immobilize the lever 22. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
