Disclosed are a method and a system for operating a video event data recorder transmitting event information to a user terminal. The method for operating the video event data recorder can comprise the steps of: determining whether at least one event has occurred while a preset mode is maintained; providing, to a user, a notification indicating that at least one event has occurred, when the at least one event has occurred; establishing a connection between the video event data recorder and the user terminal in response to the reception of a confirmation request for the at least one event from the user terminal; and transmitting, by the video event data recorder, information on the at least one event to the user terminal through the established connection.
