The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition containing an Oenothera odorata extract as an active ingredient for preventing or treating muscle atrophy, a method for preparing the same, and a food composition for preventing or alleviating muscular atrophy. The Oenothera odorata extract according to the present invention suppresses myocyte damage, necrosis, and apoptosis; exhibits an antioxidative effect on reactive oxygen species in myocytes; has an anti-muscle atrophy efficacy through the increase in the expression of heat shock protein (HSP70) having a cytoprotective function; and does not show cytotoxicity. Thus, the Oenothera odorata extract according to the present invention can be favorably used as a pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating muscle atrophy and a food composition for preventing or alleviating muscle atrophy.
