The device has at a first mass body (10) having a code track (11) for measuring successive position ranges cyclically, and at least two multiturn code disks (20) with second code tracks (21) the angular position of which is used to determine the current measured position range of the first track. The first mass and the code disks are arranged relative to each other such that their code tracks can be scanned by a single scan unit through respective first and second windows (13,23).
