摘要 <p>An alternating current vacuum switching device 100 for switching an electrical circuit under load, no load, or short-circuit conditions 100 comprises a fixed electrode 120 and a moving electrode 122 wholly within an evacuated housing 110. An actuator 144 moves the moving electrode 122, to mechanically engage and disengage the fixed electrode 122, to perform a switching function. The first electrode 122 is wholly located, and movement for the switching function occurs solely, within the vacuum evacuated housing 110. Actuator 44 may have a winding (fig 4, 144) that can be located externally or internally (fig 6) to the vacuum envelope. The moving electrode can be magnetically latched in either the engaged or the disengaged position using a permanent magnet (fig 7, 162) that acts on an iron stem 142, holding it in either make or break position of contacts 126, 128, with a magnetic field that can be overcome using coils (fig 7, 164,160) to actuate the switch. By having movement of the switching function solely within the housing a prior art bellows is not required, improving reliability of the vacuum switch.</p>
