<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a printing paper that has both high brightness and high opacity. <P>SOLUTION: The printing paper contains at least one of purple pigment, blue pigment, purple dye and blue dye. As to the paper hue measured by a method according to JIS P 8150 of the printing paper, a b<SP POS="POST">*</SP>value is -0.5 or more and less than 4 in the measurement with wavelength including that of ultraviolet ray. The printing paper is especially suitable for news print paper. The printing paper has a basis weight of 50 g/m<SP POS="POST">2</SP>or less.
