450,276. Controlling aircraft. HANDLEY PAGE, Ltd., LACHMANN, G. V., VOLKERT, G. R., and DARE, W. J., 40, Claremont Road, Cricklewood, London. May 14, 1935, No. 14116. [Class 4] Control gear for ailerons, flaps or other aerofoil surfaces of the type in which movement of the surfaces relative to the wing is compounded of translational and rotational movement, comprises a member housed within the contour of the wing and mounted for fore-and-aft translational movement relative to the wing, an aerofoil pivoted to said member, a radius link pivoted at its one end to the wing and free at its other end, a reciprocating link pivoted to the said radius link at a point other than its pivot on the wing and pivoted to said aerofoil at a point other than the pivot of said aerofoil on said member and means for preventing independent movement of the radius link and member, the links being housed within the wing. In one form, Fig. 1, a flap B is pivoted at A<1> on a track A slidable on rollers A<2>, A<3> or other guide members. A radius link C pivoted to the wing at C<1> is connected by reciprocating links C2, C<3> to flap B as shown. Radius link C may be pivoted to the wing at its upper end in which case the links C<2>, C<3> will be crossed instead of parallel as shown. Track A may be pivotally connected to link C, one link C<2> only being required in such case. The flap may form a slot when moved rearwardly or may be arranged so that a gap is always present between its leading edge and the main wing. In a modification, Fig. 2, track A is substituted by a beam E carried by radius links C, C<4> pivoted to the wing at C<5>, Co respectively. A reciprocating link C<2> is pivotally attached to the flap and to link C as shown but may be attached to both links C and C<4>. In a further modification, either of the rollers illustrated in Fig. 1 may be replaced by a link attached at one end to the track and at the other to the wing. The invention is applicable to movable aerofoils situated at the forward end of the main wing.
|
