<p>A method is disclosed and performed by collecting, by a volumetric sampler (50), a known volume of a sample from drilling fluid (28) exiting a well bore (12) penetrating a formation (14), the sample having a free gas and a dissolved gas. A first quantity of the free gas entrained in the sample is measured by a free gas detection system (52). The sample is transferred to a dissolved gas detection system (54) after the free gas in the sample is measured. The method is further performed by measuring a second quantity of the dissolved gas in the sample by the dissolved gas detection system. A total amount of one or more certain type of gas in a formation is estimated based on the first and second quantities.</p> |
