A system for displaying images 60 to a stationary observer 100 of an object 150, e.g. a vehicle in a race, moving along a path 200 comprises display units 10 arranged at a side of the path. As the observer moves their gaze along the path an image is formed by persistence of vision. Each display unit comprises a columnar array of display elements, e.g. LEDs, for output of time sequential column sections of an image frame, the display unit being arranged at a position to be visible to the observer as the object passes the display unit. A speed determining arrangement 50 determines a speed of the object and a control arrangement times the output of the sequential column sections of the image dependent upon the determined speed of the object to create an apparent image to the observer as the observer watches the object passing the display unit. A detector arrangement is also provided to detect the approach of the object and to initiate the display accordingly. |
