A 2-substituted oleanolic acid derivative of formula (I), or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof, wherein R1 is selected from the group consisting of H, optionally substituted C1-C18 alkyl, optionally substituted C2-C18 alkenyl or alkynyl, optionally substituted C3-C7 cycloalkyl or cycloalkenyl, optionally substituted aryl, optionally substituted heterocyclyl or heteroaryl, each of which is optionally substituted with a substituent selected from the group consisting of halogen, nitro, cyano, amino, hydroxyl, thiol, carboxyl, C1-C6 alkylamino, bi(C1-C6 alkyl)amino, C1-C6 alkoxy, and C1-C6 alkylthio, said C3-C7 cycloalkyl or cycloalkenyl, aryl, heterocyclyl or heteroaryl optionally further being substituted with C1-C6 alkyl, or R1 being C1-C6 alkyl substituted with a group selected from said C3-C7 cycloalkyl or cycloalkenyl, aryl, heterocyclyl or heteroaryl; and wherein W is selected from the group consisting of hydroxyl, amino, C1-C6 alkylamino, bi(C1-C6 alkyl)amino, C1-C6 alkoxy, and C1-C6 alkylthio.
