The method involves realizing cartographies (34) concerning adjustment of combustion of a thermal engine at a test bench according to temperature of a coolant in a stabilized mode. Instantaneous temperatures of components of the thermal engine are determined (30) in real-time for influencing the temperature of the coolant. Adjustments of instantaneous combustion are determined (35) from adjustments at the test bench and from the instantaneous temperature of the coolant. The instantaneous adjustments are applied to the engine in real-time. An independent claim is also included for a method for detecting dysfunction of a thermal engine.
