<p>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide phenol having a high purity and an excellent color tone.SOLUTION: Phenol has a content of nitrogen compounds of lower than 0.1 ppm, based on nitrogen atom amount, a total content of formic and acetic acids of equal to or higher than 1 ppm to lower than 5 ppm and each content of hydroquinone, catechol and benzoquinone of lower than 0.4 ppm. A method of producing phenol includes an oxidation step of at least oxidizing cumene to form a reaction liquid containing cumene hydroperoxide, an acid decomposition step of decomposing cumene hydroperoxide with an acid to form phenol and acetone and a purification step of removing ingredients other than phenol from the liquid containing formed phenol and acetone. In the purification step, the combined content of formic and acetic acids is reduced to lower than 5 ppm by distillation.</p> |
