A honeycomb structure (100) is provided with a columnar-shaped honeycomb structural part (4), which has porous partition walls (1) forming divisions of a plurality of cells (2) and an outer peripheral wall (3) and has electrical resistivity of 1 - 200 Ωcm, and a pair of belt-shaped electrode parts (6, 6) disposed on a side surface (5) of the honeycomb structural part (4). The open frontal area of the center part (21) in a cross-section orthogonal to the direction of extension of the cells (2) of the honeycomb structure part (4) is 0.70 - 0.95 times the open frontal area of the outer peripheral part (22), the center part (21) being a region extending from the center to the outer periphery up to positions at 10% of the length from the center to the outer periphery, and the outer peripheral part (22) being a region that extends from the outer periphery toward the center up to positions at 10% of the length from the outer periphery to the center. The honeycomb structure provided functions as a catalyst carrier and also as a heater by application of voltage and is configured so that even the temperature the center part can be raised to the required temperature in a short period of time when purifying exhaust gas upon application of voltage. |
